OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION
The NZ Young Auctioneers Competition aims to showcase and develop young auctioneers and improve the standard of auctioneering across the board.
The competition has received the support of the New Zealand Stock & Station Agents’ Association (NZSSAA). Members of the NZSSAA are encouraged to put forward young talent to compete in the competition.
FORMAT
Competitors will be required to be in Christchurch on Monday 6th November to be ready to begin interviews at Rural Livestock Offices, 31 Parkhouse Road, Christchurch 3:00pm. The auctioneering segment will take place 9am, Tuesday 7th November at Canterbury Agricultural Park.
INTERVIEW
The Interview component wil test communication skills and knowledge of the terms and conditions relating to livestock auctioneering. Exact interview times will be emailed prior to the New Zealand Agricultural Show.
COMPETITION
Introducing the 12th Young Auctioneers Competition. Due to Covid-19, the format of the Young Auctioneers Competition was changed and ran in conjunction with the Prime Cattle Competition. This format will continue as the new norm. 2023’s Competition will be held on Tuesday the 7th of November, 2023 at the Canterbury Agricultural Park. Three judges will use guidelines similar to those used at the ALPA Young Auctioneers Competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Competitors will be required to sell at an official live auction. After the competition, entrants will be invited to the official Young Auctioneers Competition luncheon held on the Showgrounds. (Time TBC).
PRIZES
Each entrant in the Young Auctioneers Competition will receive a Young Auctioneers shirt and entry ticket/parking pass to attend the New Zealand Agricultural Show.
First prize: $2,000 to enable the winner to attend the 2024 Sydney Royal Show to see the ALPA Young Auctioneers competition. The winner will also have the opportunity to sell as an exhibitor. The winner also receives the a Sash, Denis Hazlett Medal and NZSSAA Perpetual Trophy.
Second prize: $500 cash and Bushbuck jacket
Third prize: $250 cash and Bushbuck jacket
Note that by entering into this confirmation we take this as acceptance that you understand that any prize money paid by CAPA to you, may depending on the amount and your individual circumstances, be regarded as income by the Inland Revenue in New Zealand and therefore subject to the payment of income tax. It is your responsibility to take independent advice on this and to make such payment where required. CAPA accepts no responsibility for the payment of any income tax obligations that may or may not arise from the payment of any such prize money to you.
RULES
The competition is open to employees of members or affiliate members of the New Zealand Stock & Station Agents’ Association only. Contestants must be under the age of 30 years as at 7 November 2023. Proof of age may be required.
Nomination of a contestant by their employer for this competition is acceptance of these conditions and their completed entry form must be received by the closing date. The annual venue for the Young Auctioneers Competition will be the New Zealand Agricultural Show.
JUDGING
• Each contestant will sell three pens of prime lambs and three pens of prime cattle.
• The contestants will be judged on overall performance including: voice, diction, manner and values.
• The judges must have been a practising auctioneer.
• The competition methodology of assessment shall be fair and open to scrutiny, however, the judge’s decision shall be final and points awarded shall be confidential unless otherwise agreed by way of the judges and the Competition Convenor’s unanimous agreement.
• Contestant scores and placing, other than first and runner-up, will not be given out. Contestants may ask judges for individual feedback.
• The contestant draw for selling order will be conducted by the Competition Committee.
• The Competition Committee reserves the right to add or replace a nominated judge or contestant at any time.
• The judges have the discretion to recommend distinction or make special mention of a particular contestants attributes.
• The Competition Committee reserves the right to disqualify a judge or contestant at any time.
• All contestants must make themselves available for promotional duties on request prior to and immediately after any competition. Failure to abide by this requirement may result in forfeiture of any prize money or prizes.
• The contestants give the New Zealand Agricultural Show and other sponsors the rights to use their name and images to further promote the competition.
• Contestants attending or competing in the Young Auctioneers Competition event may only wear the supplied competition shirt, but may wear their company/employer tie. Promotion of any other membership/association or sponsor is strictly prohibited.
• If the opportunity arises for the winner to compete in an International Competition and they have left the industry or are unable to compete in further competition, the runner-up may be elevated to that vacant position.
• The winner and the winner’s employer (current at the time of use) may use the title Winner – Young Auctioneers Competition 2023. However, ownership of this title will remain with the Canterbury A&P Association. Should the winner or the winner’s employer by direct action bring the reputation of the title and the competition into disrepute (implied or otherwise) this right of use may be removed by the Canterbury A&P Association and the winner and winner’s employer shall immediately cease to use this title.
• In the event of over subscription, entrants will be determined by the Competition Committee. Stock & Station firms are encouraged to put forward their best nominations.
• The Competition Committee reserves the right to add, replace or amend these rules and conditions at their absolute discretion at any time.
All persons entering Young Auctioneers Competition, agree to cover the costs associated to accommodation and any other costs incurred not specified. The Canterbury A&P Association will reserve rooms for Monday 6th November and Tuesday 7th November (two nights), with the location and check in/out times will be advised.
